Academic Legal English: Improving Speaking and Writing Skills
This course is intended to help participants communicate about their work in English more confidently and effectively at international conferences, both in formal presentations and in informal discussions. The course will also focus on ways of improving the style, clarity, and naturalness of the participants’ academic writing.
Target Group
Researchers at doctoral and postdoctoral level in various fields of the law.
Workshop Goals
The workshop aims to help you:
- Talk about legal issues in English
- Explain your academic work, relating it to different concepts and systems of law
- Gain confidence in speaking publicly about your work and responding to questions about it
- Improve your academic writing
Workshop Content
- Useful phrases for comparing and contrasting concepts and systems, explaining what a law stipulates, explaining your research interests, etc.
- Impact strategies for presenters
- Detailed presentation feedback
- Asking and responding to questions
- Avoiding German interference and common grammar and usage errors in writing
Important: To ensure that the work on the participants’ writing and speaking skills is as relevant as possible, some of the material used in the sessions will be provided by the participants themselves in the form of writing samples (2-3 page excerpts from the participants’ own papers or theses). These writing samples will serve as a starting point for discussions of grammar, usage, and style.
Thus, participants are asked to:
- Submit a writing sample to the instructor one week before the first session.
- Bring a short Powerpoint presentation (2-3 slides) introducing themselves and their research interests to the first session.
