English in university settings: Engaging with topical issues in higher education
Target Group
Any member of staff with an advanced level of English who would benefit from developing and extending their knowledge and use of vocabulary and language relating to WU-specific and general topics in higher education (HE), in a variety of communicative genres.
Workshop Goals
The aim of the workshop will be for the participants to:
- Enhance their ability to describe and explain principles and practices relating to WU and other HE institutions in spoken and written form
- Gain an insight into university life beyond WU (with an emphasis on English-speaking countries)
- Gain confidence in discussing complicated topics using often confusing terminology
- Expand their vocabulary for the relevant themes and topics and work on any other relating linguistic techniques, with a variety of language inputs
- Practise a variety of communicative styles of writing and speaking (including holding short talks)
Workshop Content
- Eight intensive two-hour sessions designed to provide regular, focussed language input and practice
- Lively, interactive approach aimed at enhancing motivation and participation
- Opportunity to focus on participants’ individual needs
- Variety of media and exercise types provide stimulating learning environment

All registered participants will be informed of the location by email one week before the event.
Fees and Registration
This workshop is open to a limited number of participants. The registration deadline is 22 September 2015.
Please note that you should notify us before the registration deadline if you are unable to attend the workshop. Otherwise the full fee will be charged.
Please let the Personnel Development and Planning Office know if you will not be attending. There are often waiting lists for the workshops, and this will give one of your colleagues the chance to attend. In addition, if we can fill the vacancy with someone from the waiting list, no cancellation charges will apply for you.
