English for (Almost) Informal Situations
Have you ever found it difficult to start, continue or even finish a “small talk” conversation at a conference dinner? Do you sometimes feel awkward about paying or receiving a compliment after you give a talk? This workshop will cover these and many other issues addressing the uses of English in what are often sensitive social situations.
Workshop Goals and Content
This one-day workshop is aimed at helping academic staff wishing to refresh or possibly regain confidence in using English in what are thought of as informal (social) contexts but which in fact require much linguistic and cultural awareness.
Through a range of practical role-plays and other interactive exercises, the workshop will help you to prepare for dealing with potentially awkward situations including:
• Small-talk
• Giving and paying compliments
• Apologising
• Thanking
• Giving / receiving good / bad news
Methods
- Lively, interactive approach enhances motivation and participation
- Opportunity to focus on participants’ individual needs
- Variety of media and exercise types provide stimulating learning environment

All registered participants will be informed of the location by email one week before the event.
Fees and Registration
This workshop is open to a limited number of participants. The registration deadline is 11 April 2017.
Please note that you should notify us before the registration deadline if you are unable to attend the workshop. Otherwise the full fee will be charged.
Please let the Personnel Development and Planning Office know if you will not be attending. There are often waiting lists for the workshops, and this will give one of your colleagues the chance to attend. In addition, if we can fill the vacancy with someone from the waiting list, no cancellation charges will apply for you.
