Principles of Persuasion: How to Deploy Rhetorical Resources in Academic Text and Talk
Even expert writers and speakers often wonder how they might make their English more persuasive, more appealing, and more powerful rhetorically. A good command of grammar and a wide range of vocabulary are a necessary though not sufficient condition for successful communication. What does it take, then, to tell a good research story clearly and enthusiastically?
Target Group
This is a workshop for faculty who want to increase the rhetorical impact of their written and spoken English.
Workshop Goal
Having attended this workshop, you should be able to
- Use rhetorical resources in English confidently and effectively
- Identify and apply the key techniques necessary to enhance the impact of your messages
- Avoid the most common mistakes in vocabulary, syntax and pronunciation
Workshop Content
- Sentence structure and rhetorical appeal; the principles of end focus and end weight
- Repetition and variation as stylistic devices
- Redundancy, cohesion, comprehensibility
- Hedges and boosters
- Idioms and metaphors
- How to build rapport with your audience

Fees and Registration
This workshop is open to a limited number of participants. The registration deadline is 2 November 2018.
Please note that you should notify us before the registration deadline if you are unable to attend the workshop. Otherwise the full fee will be charged.
Please let the Personnel Development and Planning Office know if you will not be attending. There are often waiting lists for the workshops, and this will give one of your colleagues the chance to attend. In addition, if we can fill the vacancy with someone from the waiting list, no cancellation charges will apply for you.
